Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger has confirmed that Per Mertesacker, who is yet to play this season because of injury will be staying at the club.
Mertesacker is yet to feature this season because of a serious knee injury he sustained in the pre-season, but Wenger said the club have exercised an option to extend his contract by one more year.
The centre-back’s current deal was due to expire this summer.
“He is a leader of the team and he is also one of the four centre backs who has experience and can guide the team,” Wenger told Arsenal official website.
“There were no negotiations in fact, because he had an option for extension. So it’s not really a new contract, it’s just an extension of the old one. We had to take that option early in the season and the decision was made quite easily.
Mertesacker joined Arsenal from Werder Bremen in August 2011 and has won two FA Cups with the Gunners.
