Champions League: Man Utd Defeats Basel 3-0

Substitute Marouane Fellaini proved an unlikely source of inspiration as Manchester United comfortably defeated Basel 3-0 on their return to the Champions League on Tuesday.

Jose Mourinho handed Paul Pogba the captaincy, but his time wearing the armband was shortlived as a hamstring injury forced the midfielder off in the 19th minute.

Ironically, that moment led to United’s opening goal with Pogba’s replacement, Marouane Fellaini, nodding home Ashley Young’s centre in the 35th minute.

Romelu Lukaku added Man Utd second in the 53rd minute before a fine night’s work for Mourinho’s side was capped with seven minutes remaining as substitute Marcus Rashford curled home a third.

It was United’s first Champions League game since December 2015, with Jose Mourinho’s side having engineered a return to the competition by winning the Europa League last season.
