Serena Williams cruised into the third round of the Australian Open on Thursday with an astounding 6-3 6-4 win over Czech Lucie Safarova.
For the second straight round, Serena Williams has been drawn against a former top-10 player, onetime world No. 5 Lucie Safarova and for the second time, Williams has emerge victorious with straight set victories.
Williams fired 35 winners in a comprehensive win in bid to claim her 23rd Grand Slam title
“That was pretty good, hopefully I can keep going,” Williams said.
“Everyone works hard in the off-season. I wanted to work on my movement and I feel I am dangerous when I move… it’s one of my strengths.”
Serena Williams will play 23-year-old Californian Nicole Gibbs, who earlier saw off fellow American Irina Falconi 6-4, 6-1.
Williams and the No. 92-ranked Gibbs met once previously, with the 22-time Grand Slam champion surrendering only three games.
