Argentina have ended Edgardo Bauza’s reign as coach after just eight months in the post, new AFA president Claudio Tapia has said and will now fly to Europe to attempt to convince Jorge Sampaoli to replace the hapless Bauza.
Sampaoli is known to be keen on a return to international management and to right some wrongs after winning a Copa America title with Chile at the expense of his homeland.
Argentina Football Association president Tapia told reporters in a brief press conference after meeting with Bauza’s agent: “We’ve made a verbal agreement. We’ve informed Edgardo Bauza that he is no longer the coach of the national team.
La Albiceleste are fifth in the 10-team South American qualifying group, with only the top four assured of qualifying for the tournament in Russia.
Finishing fifth would mean a play-off against a team from Oceania.
